Malta Consul, EU envoy hold talks on cooperation, Europe Day plans

The Honorary Consul of Malta in Dhaka, Shoeb Chowdhury, held a courtesy meeting with the Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh Michael Miller on Wednesday.

During the meeting, they discussed bilateral interests and regional cooperation.

Malta and Bangladesh want to enhance bilateral ties

High Commissioner of Malta Mr. Reuben Gauci called on State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed at the Foreign Ministry of Bangladesh government on Wednesday (1 April 2026). Reuben Gauci told Shama Obaed about the Maltese government's willingness to recruit more workers from Bangladesh for different Maltese industries including hospitality and construction sectors. Reuben Gauci extended his gratitude to Shama Obaed for sharing her valuable time with him for the appointment.

Maltese envoy and IGP exchange views on policing work

Maltese High Commissioner for Bangladesh and India Mr. Reuben Gauci called on Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md. Ali Hossain Fakir in the capital's Police Headquarters (PHQ) on Monday (30 March 2026). Senior police officers welcomed Mr. Reuben Gauci and Honorary Consul of Malta in Dhaka M. Shoeb Chowdhury when they arrived at PHQ. The call on was held yesterday afternoon at 3:30 pm.

Bangladesh's political turf was more or less sound and stable from 2009 to 2014. Immediate past ruling party Awami League won the elections held in December 2008 under the jurisdiction of a caretaker government. Awami League took power in January 2009 and the country was running smoothly till 2014. Things became troublesome and complicated when the major political opponents abandoned the 2014 parliamentary elections and the polls turned out to be one-sided. 153 Awami League candidates were elected without contests. Lofty ideals like democracy, social justice, pluralism and inclusion faced perilous hurdles through the controversial elections which were held on 5 January 2014.
